If you’re facing a situation that’s really hard to get through, I understand how you feel. It could be a family dilemma or a personal trial. It might also just be something you want to see happen, but it just isn’t going through. You know that God is in control, but how do you trust that God knows best? What if His timing doesn’t match up with yours?
My Personal Journey To Trust That God Knows Best
There was a time I went through exactly that. But my waiting came in the form of house hunting.
I’m a recovering perfectionist (as I’m sure many of you are as well) and I’ve been known to want control of a situation and want what I want when I want it.
Yes, I’m sure that sounds very selfish, but if we all looked deep inside our hearts, we all have a bit of that same selfishness in all of us. Who’s with me?
My husband and I decided that we wanted to buy a house. My husband is a police officer, and we had been saving money by living in an apartment with 1/2 off rent – with him being the apartment courtesy officer.
It was definitely a blessing from God at the time of our move, but we felt that after a few years here, it was time for a place with a backyard for the kids and dog to be able to run free and enjoy unlimited fresh air.
Our house hunting journey began and I was very hopeful. Of course, who wouldn’t be? If you’re anything like me, I get excited for the next journey ahead and for new adventures.
I had this idea that we’d find the perfect house for us within the first day of house hunting, put an offer down, and know that night that we were accepted.
Naive, I know. I found that out later as well.
Anyway, long story short, I was having to trust that God knows best, even though I didn’t.
So how do you trust that God knows best when can’t see the end result?
Scripture For God’s Timing
The best place in looking for what God is trying to tell you would be the very words He breathed.
Scripture is one of the ways He speaks to us and it should be the first place we look to when we are having a hard time.
So What Does He Say About Waiting For Him?
“This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” (NLT).
I love this verse because it identifies that sometimes future situations come slowly and we are simply just to wait patiently. When we do that, it’ll happen.
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (NIV).
Whatever God has planned for us, when we put our hope in Him, it will give us renewed strength for the waiting process. We won’t get tired of waiting when we put our hope and trust in Him.
“Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” (NLT).
This gives us a backup that we get our strength when we wait patiently for God’s timing. It’s hard to show patience, but God will keep strengthening us.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (NLT).
A lot of the time, we think we know what’s best for us. Instead, we need to put our trust in what God wants for us. When we do that, He’ll show us our better path.
So How Do We Trust God’s Timing?
1. Dive Headfirst Into His Word
Use the verses that I have supplied you with, as well as more you can find when you open your Bible. You never know how God will speak to you.
It’s always wise to look directly to God first when you are facing trials, especially when you want to trust that God knows best.
2. Stay In Conversation With Him
This doesn’t mean that you have to have full-blown perfect prayers all day long.
What I mean is continuing one or two sentence prayers – just talking to God about how you feel and what’s going on.
Here’s an example of some that I used during my time of waiting with my housing situation:
“God, I’m having a hard time trusting your timing, and I need help. I really want a house, but I know you have the perfect one set aside for us. Thank you for helping me wait because I know your way is perfect”.
When I said out loud what I was feeling, but directing it to God, I was able to find a solution for my waiting, and being thankful for waiting as I was talking.
God helped me work out how I was feeling, just by bringing Him into my problem.
He should be your Best Friend and the one you go to with everything.
What You Gain When You Trust That God Knows Best
There’s a weight that is lifted off of us when we give God full and complete control of our circumstances.
We CANNOT do everything by ourselves, and why would we want to?
We have the Creator of the Universe as our Lord and King who wants to be apart of our lives. He wants to be our Best Friend and have a full relationship with us.
Frankly, it would be stupid on our parts not to take advantage of that.
Yes, there will always be times when we behave stubbornly and think we know what’s best. But when we stay in right relationship with Him and keep Him as our Best Friend, that kind of thinking doesn’t last long.
The Fruit We Gain Through Trusting God’s Timing
My kids and I are learning the Fruit of the Spirit during our morning basket time and it has really opened my eyes to the importance of growing the fruit you have into the Fruit that God wants you to have.
When you trust in God’s timing, you are growing stronger in patience.
When I was in high school, I went to a private school. In homeroom, there would be a time for prayer requests. Sometimes, someone would ask for patience. Everyone would say, “Don’t as for patience because God will give you something to be patient for!”.
It would make everyone scared to ask for patience and then no one would.
Looking back now, I find that is just a harmful way to grow in the Lord. Don’t we want to stretch our comfort zone and be the person He wants us to be?
Do we want to just stay where we are and never grow in right relationship with Him?
I hope that you choose the path of growing stronger in Him.
He gives you the gift of a situation to grow your faith and the opportunity grow closer to Him.
God’s Timing Shows Perfect Results
Through the struggle to wait for the perfect house, it gave me the opportunity to give Him complete control.
It also produced the opportunity and a need for me to seek Him fully and in a passionate manner.
Would I have gone to Him as frequently if He just handed me the perfect house on day #1? Probably not.
Through this process, we looked at many houses. We had 2 rejection offers and went through times when we didn’t know we’d have a house before our lease was up.
I had my wishlist of what I wanted in a house, and every day I prayed as specifically as I could for the right house for our family.
God’s timing is indeed perfect. That happy day came when we were told that our offer was accepted on the third house we offered.
Not only did it have everything from my prayer “wishlist”, but the major things that came up in the home inspection were taken care of my the seller.
When we trust in God’s perfect timing and trust that God knows best, He will give you the desires of your heart.
The only thing you have to do is stay close to Him by continuing to keep conversation and prayer going, stay in the Bible every day and trust that He will make His perfect way known when He is ready.
His way is PERFECT!
