Have you ever felt like you are just so busy that you don’t have time for anything? Even time to feed your spiritual life and grow closer to God?
Being a mom is SUPER HARD and you are constantly feeling like you have to be everywhere all the time. You feel like everyone is always needing something. It’s exhausting being in that type of season.
You never feel like you are getting enough sleep and your mind is always running through your to-do list. I’m going to ask you a personal question that I really want you to think about. How often are you making time for God, even with your busy schedule?
Finding A Spiritual Life That Sustains You
I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but spending time with God everyday is what’s going to keep you spiritually nourished.
1 Peter 2:1-3 says, “So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.” (NLT).
We need to come to God every day with cravings for Him. It’s impossible to get through this life alone. We need Him to sustain us and help us grow to be more like Him.
How Do We Make Time To Get Closer To Him?
1. Decide What Time Of Day You Are At Your Best
Are you a morning person or a night owl? What if you are in a season when you are still getting up at all hours of the night with a baby? Seasons change all of the time, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
If you have small children at home and feel like you have no time, God knows where you are. He has such patience for you and will meet you where you are!
I LOVE what Heidi St. John says in Becoming Mom Strong. She says that even when she was knee-deep in babies and all the things that moms to little ones go through, “God is just as present when I’m unloading the dishwasher as He is when I’m doing an inductive Bible study“.
You might be a mom who is getting out of a season where their children need their full attention all day long. If you are one of those women, I encourage you to figure out a time where you can wake up earlier than your kids, or stay up later than your kids.
Your spiritual life is SO important and needs that quality time alone with God. The time you spend with Him every day will bring you to a closer relationship with Him. Are you where you want to be?
2. Make an appointment with God everyday
Just like you would make an appointment with your Doctor or Dentist, make a specific time to spend with Him everyday. It is such a privilege to be able to spend time with the Creator of the Universe!
We often think that this is a given and take it for granted so often. To put this into perspective, how often are we able to get one on one time with the President of the United States or the Queen of England? How about our state and local government for that matter?
These are regular humans who are powerful people, and we have the King of kings and Lord of lords who wants to make intentional time with us. How awesome is that?! The least we can do is set and keep an appointment with Him daily.
3. Bring God Into Your Day
It can be very easy to take time with God every day, or go to church every week, and then go on with our lives trying to do it all ourselves. Your spiritual life and growth in Him depends on you bringing Him along in everything you do with your day.
Often times, when my kids are at each other all day, I pray for help before I break up the fighting or before I set punishment. I want my attitude and my influence over my kids, or my husband for that matter, to be blessed and fruitful.
If I left it up to myself to punish or break up the fights, or talk to my husband about difficult matters, things would not go so well. It would be natural to come across as harsh or uncaring. I would say words that I don’t mean.
However, if I’m asking God for help and wisdom before I tackle those situations, and let Him be my guide and defense, I have found that those situations are so much more fruitful. They are directed down a path that is God-led and not Samantha-led.
4. Give God Your Tasks
Let me bring you in on a well-known, but forgotten secret…God can handle anything that you throw His way. He is the Almighty. The Maker of the Universe. There isn’t anything that He can’t handle.
God can handle your time; He can handle your finances; He can handle your long to-do list. When you give Him everything you have to do, He invites you to a peaceful day.
He will help you choose which objectives will bringing you closer to not only a more rewarding day, but a more prosperous life. Pray over your time; pray over your finances; ask Him to take over your to-do list. Invite Him in.
5. Bring Down Your Mindset Barriers
When you have small children at home, your spiritual life has a very real chance of getting pushed to the side. When you are alone all day without anyone to talk to, and little people who need you all of the time, it’s very easy for depression, stress and anxiety to take over.
Having depression can change your mindset to not wanting to even get dressed, let alone have intentional time with God everyday. When I was home all day with little ones, I went through a depression that kept me from spending daily time with God.
What got me out was, one day in my despair and crying out to Him for help in getting out, He spoke to me. He told me to say “Thank You” to Him for the wonderful things He has blessed me with.
How could I do that in the mental state that I was in at the time? “Are you kidding me, God? I’m depressed and You want me to think of nice, wonderful things when I’m feeling the way that I do?”
At that moment, all I could start thanking Him for was something as simple as having clean water. That’s ALL I could think of! But you know what? It helped!!
After thanking Him for something as simple as water, my mind started moving to more and more things to say thank you for! And in that moment, my mind became so much clearer.
Philippines 4:6-7 says, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (NLT).
By coming to Him with thanksgiving, my mind had been turned to peace and not worry, stress or loneliness.
Staying Close To God Will Make You A Better Mother
No matter where you are in your season of motherhood, your spiritual life is SO important. It sustains you and keeps you closer to God when you are in the midst of both hardship and joy.
You have the Creator of the Universe who wants to stay close and connected with you. To help you in every trial and celebrate wins with you.
Pick a time of day that you are at your best. Make an appointment in that timeframe that you will be obligated to keep, just like a doctor’s appointment.
Bring Him into every area of your day and use His wisdom to help you make the right choices. Give God the tasks you have set for yourself. Pray over them and invite God in to have His way.
Keep your mind right by staying thankful and He will give you peace. You will stay spiritually nourished, even in your busy life as a mom.
