What does it mean to call your child “an arrow”? Raising our children as arrows can seem like a baffling concept. Scripture says in Psalm 127:4 “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth” (NIV).
This means that you are crafting your children as weapons for God! How amazing is that? And scary all at the same time! But guess what that makes you friend, a WARRIOR!
You ARE a warrior for God. He has called you to raise up arrows in the war that is raging around all of us.
God has given us these precious gifts for a reason. It’s our job as stewards of them, to bring them up as adults who will fight in spiritual warfare.
We are not called to just grow them up to be part of this world.
You Are A Warrior!
It is so easy to think of a nice, warm verse like Isaiah 66:13 “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you…”, but that isn’t all God has called us to do for our children.
We have to stay deep in the Word of God, so that we will be ready for any attack the enemy has for us.
Raising our children as arrows will NOT be easy! Nonetheless, God has made you a warrior to get the job done for Him.
Make no mistake, he is watching and waiting. He’s trying to get at your children to stop them from being who they are created to be.
It is YOUR job to shape them. Every part of an arrow has a purpose, just like every part of your child has a purpose.
We Have A REAL Enemy
I am going to make this as simple as I can: Satan wants your children. Plain and simple. He wants to trick them into doing his biding, as young as he can get them to start doing it.
He doesn’t want you to put the guidance of scripture into their hearts and he certainly doesn’t want you to keep them from what the world says is right.
Satan’s counting on you to let your kids be a part of the world and enjoy everything about it. He wants them listening and watching movies and music that are inappropriate for them.
Satan wants them to hear the lies in their schools that the Universe was not created by God. He wants them to think that Jesus was just an ordinary man, and not the Savior of this world who came to conquer it.
The accuser wants them tied down and unable to know the TRUTH.
What Can Mothers Do About This Attack On Our Children?
Spend time DAILY in God’s Word! For me, that is in the early mornings of the day when no one is awake yet. It gives me time, when I am at my best, to soak in what He wants to tell me, and how I can have a strong, faithful day.
If your children do not have a parent who is out on the battlefield for them, how are they going to be raised to be a warrior one day as well? If you are just starting out in alone time with God every day, please don’t think that just because you don’t know much, that you will never know.
No one can know everything and everyone is always learning. Even seasoned pastors are always learning and growing. Everyone has to start somewhere, and the more you read the Bible, the more the scriptures stick in your head.
Get your children involved in your studies. Start them at a young age memorizing scripture. Have morning devotions together and ask questions about what they learned.
Apply what they learned in their daily lives. Right now my kids and I are studying the Fruit of the Spirit. Whenever they don’t want to share, I remind them that by sharing, they are showing that they love the other person.
Have you heard of the phrase, “sharing is caring”. That’s exactly where it comes from! I tell them that Jesus calls us to love and serve everyone, even when it’s hard. Sharing is part of showing love. In those little ways, we can develop their minds for Christ.
Give them the tools, now, to learn how to defeat the devil. We have overcome this world through the blood of Jesus. He has told us that Satan is “the father of lies” and the “accuser of the brethren”.
The tool that we have been given is the Word of God and the TRUTH that it brings. Teaching them young to have confidence in their faith in God is one of the most powerful tools you can give them.
Raising our children as arrows will make THEM into a tool, powerful enough that their actions and faith pierce through the heart of the devil.
Raising Our Arrows Consistently
You can’t think that if you just take them to church every Sunday that they will automatically just be warriors for Christ when they turn 18.
Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. You have to mold them, craft them, pour into them everything that scripture says about them.
When they grow and know who they are in Christ, they will be shaped into a weapon that was designed to defeat the enemy. Show them the power of Jesus’ name and how His light can cut through any darkness that Satan tries to bring around us.
Friend, never forget that you are a WARRIOR for Christ! You were created for important things and you have a duty to God that you raise your children to be warriors for His Kingdom.
Refine them, sharpen them, craft them. Pour scripture into them daily, and then when real life hits, remind them of that scripture and how God gives it to us for help in our struggles.
Don’t be afraid to let them know that there is a “bad guy” out there, but that he has already been defeated. He attacks us because he wants to take us down with him. He knows his fate and wants to share it with you.
Raising your children as arrows is what every mother was called to do.
